Burger King Texican Whopper Issue

Apparently Burger King has angered Mexican officials with another one of it's great advertising campaigns. This time it was for the Texican Whopper in Spain. The ad which features a cowboy and a Mexican wrestler (clad in what appears to be a mexican flag) with a voiceover letting you know that the Texican Whopper has "The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," has apparently hit a nerve with the Mexican people. Check it out:

The use of the Mexican flag in this ad is inappropriate, if the fact that it goes against Mexican law is considered. Corruption and the absence of the rule of law in certain areas of Mexican life has often been criticized in American media, and also by American officials. It is strange that the people at Burger King lacked the sensibility to forecast that the ad will provoke a reaction, considering what is going on right now in Mexico with the drug against the drug cartels, which is a war for the rule of law. Personally, I am a Mexican, and I also consider inappropriate that Mexican immigrants have frequently raised Mexican flags in U.S. territory, which could create an international incident, and is also against Mexican law, or at least its spirit, which imposes prison on those that could lead the country into a war with a foreign country. More or less in the same way as the journalist who threw his shoes to Mr. Bush is now in prison. What I am more concerned, however, is the use of the word destiny, as in manifest destiny, the doctrine that justified the imperialistic expansion of the United States over Mexican and Indian lands, and the corresponding massacre of Native Americans. According to Mexican history, a kid in the Military Academy of Chapultepec, wrapped himself with the Mexican flag and then jumped from a 100 meter cliff, to avoid the American troops capturing it. The commander of the American army will not allow his soldiers to capture that flag later. Instead he ordered appropriate ordinance honors. Of course, a tiny Mexican wrestler looks always like an easy bite for a giant Texan. I just don't think there is any taste in associating manifest destiny with the very familiar idea of a hamburger. McDonald's should join the Mexican government in its protest.

I´m in the same place: the biggest problem here is the "by destiny" thing...it´s just so f····imperialistic. Together by destiny? together because the U.S took the land!!!

What utter bullcrap. There is absolutely no association or mention of "Manifest Destiny" in this ad, nor is it inferred. It says that the two characters were brought together by destiny to be together, as in fate. Simple fate. I think there is too much thin skinned reaction today to simple things. There is no Mexican Flag being shown improperly in this ad either, rather his wrestling cape happens to be in red white and green, which is a part of his costume. I put forth that the "Mexican" wrestler character is no more offensive to Mexico than the "American" cowboy character is to America. The ad was run in Europe for heaven's sake. The characters had to be exxagerated/emphasized to assure that the European views understood the gist of it, ie: US and Mexico foods getting together to make a good sandwich.

A more legitimate protest would be against Burger King itself, for selling their cheap and unhealthy "fast food" in the first place.
