The Bar is the oldest watering hole in Coral Gables. It’s been open since 1946.
When I first visited The Bar, it was already past the semicentennial mark. If you’re looking for a spot to sit down, vibe to some tunes, and eat some bar food, you’ve found your home away from home.
In May 2015, Josh Marcus of Josh’s Deli fame revamped the menu at The Bar. He took their comfort food-heavy menu and brought some new and fresh ingredients into the mix.
Since that revamp, the menu has shrunk a bit and undergone some changes. But, don’t worry, the food is still good, and once you have some drinks in you, you’ll be all about the music anyway.

November 14th, 2010 – A couple of folks had been asking me to check out the patty melt at The Bar in Coral Gables. I liked the atmosphere at the actual bar itself, so I took a seat there.
After downing my refillable cola, I decide I will take everything to go, mainly because my wife is starving, and if I don’t, she won’t go for the whole I eat; she waits routine.
The patty melt was the one thing I was 100% sure to be getting; the cheeseburger rolls joined in, and what the hell, let’s throw in some chicken nachos.
The nachos were topped with cheese, chicken chunks, and jalapeño spirals with some pico and sour cream packed up independently. They’re good and probably even great while you drink, but nothing new here.
Cheeseburger Rolls?
The cheeseburger bar rolls were my favorite, and I’m saying that even though pickles aren’t necessarily my favorite thing in the world. The cheeseburger bar rolls are egg rolls stuffed with cheeseburger ingredients like beef, cheese, onions, tomatoes, and pickles.
The side of Thousand Island dressing served with it did nothing for me. I can best describe them as a Hot Pocket with better ingredients.
When you eat them there, the presentation is a little better, not those logs you see in the picture. And that leaves the patty melt…
Is it even possible to mess up a patty melt? Patty melts aren’t considered burgers by some folks, but I beg to differ.
As long as you get the proper bread (rye), make sure it’s nice & griddled, slightly buttery, with tasty grilled onions that mix with the melted cheese on the patty; you’re golden.
So how was it? The answer is it was pretty pretay (Larry David-style) good, just what you would expect. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
